June 2 2011: Two Women In Two Gardens, A Decade Apart (1960s/1970s)
Two women, in two different gardens, perhaps taken a decade or more apart: the monochrome image appears to date from the early 1960s, the colour image from the 1970s. Yet both were found in the same place, and although not obviously related, something in the formats, settings and compositions imply a relationship between the two pictures.
I’m not sure what it is, exactly, only that somehow these photographs seem to ‘belong’ with one-another and have a force when viewed together that neither quite exerts when seen in isolation. Perhaps images, like their individual subjects, do well to co-operate when their coming together can – as in this instance – significantly increase the visual impact.
