June 7 2011: Man With a Camera, after Anne Collier (late 1970s)

Having spent the first three months of 2011 in residence at Nottingham Contemporary, working in extended close proximity to the works of Anne Collier, it’s probably no surprise that when the image below surfaced a few weeks back my immediate thought was of her work, particularly the series of pictures based on Faye Dunaway’s role as the photographer Laura Mars in a 1978 suspense film. Here, the same late 1970s era is invoked, and although he is self-evidently male rather than female, and viewed in profile rather than facing the viewer directly (as Collier’s Dunaway does), there’s something about this man’s expression and hold on the camera itself that suggests a connection: perhaps a similar degree of unsettling mania in the pursuit of images?
